My first tip would be do NOT trust and follow Instructions from various website pages or blogs, with out first make sure to take backup of your data and cross check the solutions that is provide it to you.

The second and most important tip is to always have an offline encrypted backup in a safe location, so you can always can start from a base and not from zero. Keep in mind that there is no way to be absolute safe so act according to that belief.
